Important Information for Homeowners Who Heat With Oil
At Issue: Massachusetts has a new law effective July 1, 2010 to address oil leaks from your home heating system. If you heat your home with oil, this new law may require action on your part prior to Sept. 30, 2011. It also makes new insurance coverage available to you.
The Facts: Please visit: www.mass.gov/dep/cleanup/laws/hhsl.htm to see how this law impacts you. The law has two major provisions that require:
- the installation of either an oil safety valve or an oil supply line with protective sleeve on systems that do not currently have these devices; and
- insurance companies that write homeowner policies to offer coverage for leaks from heating systems that use oil.
Our solution: For homeowners who are affected by this new law, and who comply with the MA requirements, we can now provide “first party” and “third party” coverage for the cost of cleaning up leaks and for legal defense costs. The Certificate of Compliance can be completed by your local fire department, and is required before the endorsement can be added.
